Book Ten Count, Vol. 1 (Yaoi Manga) Review :

Rihito Tikari's Ten Count uses the standard uke/seme yaoi trope, a somewhat plausible story, and has above-average artwork. The uke is Shirotani, an obsessive-compulsive bandleader who is neurotically paralyzed by the thought of gems and dirt, and the seme is Kurose, a cool-headed therapist who offers to help, and then befriends, Shirotani. Ultimately, however, it becomes clear that Shirotani's feelings have evolved beyond friendship - as do Kurose's. Kurose retreats behind a veneer of professional distance, while Shirotani perseveres in his recovery all the while yearning for Kurose. While the story is entertaining enough, the artwork, save for one peccadillo, is very good. In fact, the author-artist designs extraordinarily impressive two page compositions that are skillfully integrated through the use of line, value, texture and shape. It's an accomplishment you will miss on the Kindle, so I recommend the print version. That said, the peccadillo is this: while the characters as drawn are gorgeous and, yes, sexy, when in profile they start to resemble Sonic the Hedgehog. I kid you not.Yes, I get that it's a visual stylization. But really. Here you have these beautiful, erotically charged young men who are attracted to each other, but if they turn their faces to kiss, you're suddenly watching hedgehog love. Sheesh.I've recently started reading yaoi and yuri as part of a survey of LGBTQ manga for an Honors course I'm teaching at my university next year called "Queer Manga and LGBTQ World History." Tikari's work is entertaining but it's not likely to steal your heart away. Still, I've ordered the second book in the series. My gold standard in this genre is Fumino's I Hear the Sunspot series, which has beautifully integrated subplots, outstanding characterization, complex and challenging themes and exquisite artwork. While not yaoi or yuri, Kamatani' Our Dreams at Dusk is transcendent. Ten Count isn't in the same class, but can stand on its own merits. The artwork is at times beautiful, especially the line quality, and the compositions are masterful. The characters, especially Kurose, are interesting, but it's too early to say how well developed they might actually become. Note: While the cover is highly erotic, there is no sexually explicit material in volume 1; I'm told that there is explicit material in the reading volumes in the series.
I really loved this. REALLY loved it. I am an inveterate manga reader, particularly in the BL genre, and this is probably the most impressed I have ever been with a manga from that genre. There is still so much more to learn and find out about the characters, too. Most of what I'd like to say has been stated before, but I *really* want to credit the team at SuBLime for doing such a fantastic job. When it comes to English releases in the yaoi genre, it's unfortunate to say but in the past, with major licencer DMG/June's "quantity over quality" approach, the bar was not set very high with regard to the quality of translation and localization you'd get. I should say that it was very inconsistent, and during the "boom period" for yaoi, the quality would vary wildly between releases with that particular company. It is extremely refreshing to see that SuBLime puts so much into the translation work for each title, clearly aiming for a consistent standard of quality that they all but never fail to meet. I think we should all be very grateful to them for raising the bar when it comes to what defines a truly "professional release" in the yaoi industry.
