Oh this book is soooooo much fun and once again showcases the brilliant way that Felice Stevens can interject herself into a milieu which is a little off the beaten track and insert into that milieu characters who are sharply drawn and extremely likeable. And just for kicks, in this one she throws in a ghost named Rachel whose appearances kept reminding me of the fairy godmother in Cinderella even when she delivered heart wrenching news. Bippity bobbity boo, indeed! But what Ms. Stevens has given us is a tease on the story behind the original "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir," which was written by R.A. Dick and published in 1945 and set to film in 1947 with Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney. It had a brief two-year run on television in the the late 1960s with Hope Lange as Mrs. Muir and Edward Mulhare as Captain Gregg, the ghost. The plots are not all that similar, but the sense of wonder is there. And what wonders we are present with in Charlie Muir and his next door neighbor Ian Gregg, two late 20s total opposite blue collar types from Brooklyn who are perfectly cast in their genres, and whose last names are quite familiar.Charlie, who bounced around for most of his early life in foster care, is now a salesman in a store that specializes in vintage clothing which he unabashedly loves and wears everywhere (even though it's him on the cover with hardly a vintage outfit, but no matter). Oh, and have we mentioned that he is openly gay and the sudden proprietor of a magnificent townhouse left to him by his great-great aunt whom he never knew and didn't even know existed until her executors followed her explicit demands that they find her only heir and put him in that house--for a very specific reason, it turns out.Ian is a handyman of sorts, for his neighbors and various local contractors, a seriously hot and straight playboy of sorts whose Brooklyn accent is cleverly conveyed by the author in certain words which run together--Charlie is a bit more erudite even though both of them are only high school graduates. In fact, that alone is a departure from Ms. Stevens usual character profiles of highly educated professional men with sexual identity issues. And then there is Rachel, the ghost of Muir house past, who is totally off-the-wall (well, all over the walls as it turns out), and as unbelievable as her character is she is the linchpin for one of the most enchanting gay4you romances you are likely to read this year. (I am not a fan of that genre in the least, but when it works it works and honey, this one works). The deeply introspective narrative which brings two complete opposites into a fantasy world where they are witnesses to a tragic love story which took place on their premises made this one work in spades.Even if like this observer you are not a fan of ghost stories get yourself a copy of this one and bring a hanky along, and maybe a shot of schnapps, and you will bippity bop along with a grin. I know that's a weird title for review but those two men and one thing are at the heart of this wonderful story. I started out expecting more of a Ghost and Mrs. Muir type story--all cutesy and lovable and what I got was so very much more. By the time I finished, I really believed in ghosts and fate and eternal love. Robert and Eddie's story wrung my heart. Confused yet? Don't be. Ian and Charlie have a special connection to the dead lovers Robert and Eddie that spans decades. The ending was so heartwarming and tear producing. I loved it. Please do read this great book.
